UAE Mourns the Death of HH Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

Sultan bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1 December 1956 – 18 November 2019)

19 November 2019, Abu Dhabi, UAE ~ President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, mourns the death of his brother, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the President’s Representative, who passed away on Monday, 18 November 2019.

Sheikh Sultan is the second son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of UAE. He was educated at Millfield School in Somerset in the United Kingdom and is a graduate of Sandhurst military academy. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the UAE Armed Forces with a rank of Brigadier from 1978 to 1982. He was appointed as Chairman of the Public Works Department, Abu Dhabi in 1988. He was appointed as deputy prime minister in the fifth UAE cabinet in 1990 till 2008. He was appointed as the president’s representative which he held until his death.

Sheikh Sultan held various positions such as Chairman of the Zayed Center in Abu Dhabi, Chairman of the media and cultural centre, Chairman of the Emirates Heritage Club and Chairman of Zayed center for coordination and follow-up, a member of Supreme Petroleum Council, and a member of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA).

Sheikh Sultan was very involved in raising Arabian horses and in the care and maintenance of endangered animals. The Arabian horse world knew him as an enthusiastic breeder and caretaker of the Heritage Arabian, and he guarded this lineage with the foundation sire to his breeding farm of the US Arabian racing stallion, Monarch AH.

At the directives of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, the UAE will observe an official mourning period of three days with the flag flown at half-mast.
