19 March 2022, Houston, Texas, USA ~ The 35th Annual Darley Awards took place at the Sam Houston race track on 19 March 2022, and the Darley Sprint was first on the race card for the evening. A field of ten went out for the seven furlong Gr 3 with Uptown Sandy Girl and Sand Canyon JS leading out of the gate. Taking up the rear were Paddys Day in 9th place and Like Moulin Rouge in 10th. In the stretch, Highh Maintenance had taken the lead from Uptown Sandy Girl and Paddys Day under jockey Stewart Elliott was traveling well in third along the rail, when he saw daylight in the stretch. Directed by jockey Jose Alvarez, the Ken Danyluk trainee, Like Moulin Rouge, was on the move from the back of the pack, first from the outside and then blasting down the middle into the lead over Paddys Day in the final strides. After the awards photos, a stewards’ inquiry and film review, Paddys Day was awarded the win and Like Moulin Rouge was placed third for interference against Quick Sand AA in his run mid-stretch. Paddys Day is trained by Rhonda Tuley and owned by Jane Teutsch, who is also the breeder. The win time for the seven furlongs was 1:35:46 and afforded the 11-year-old Paddys Day his 31st career victory and 23rd stakes win in 54 lifetime starts. Second was awarded to Quick Sand AA.
