American Krone was the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race, Breeders’ Cup
18 September, 2016, Los Alamitos, California, USA ~ The first female jockey to win the a USA Triple Crown race and a Breeder’s Cup – Julie Krone- has been tapped as an Ambassador for the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival.
Ms Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, Chairperson of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA), Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR), made the announcement at the prize distribution ceremony of the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Arabian Cup Diamond Jewel, a Grade II race run on Saturday, September 2016, at Los Alamitos, California.
“I am honored to be named as one of the Ambassadors of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival,” said the 53-year-old retired American jockey, who has amassed a whopping 3,704 winners. “It is a tremendous honor for me,” she said after attending the final leg of the three-race Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Triple Crown.
Commenting on the race in which 9 Purebred Arabians contested the Grade II event over a mile, Krone said, “This Sheikh Mansoor Festival race is so beautiful and exciting. It was nice to see so much speed and the horses battling so hard to the finish. The two horses (Sand Victor and Paddys Day) fighting so hard and putting everything into it, a very exciting race.”
In 1993, Krone won the Belmont Stakes on Colonial Affair to become the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race and then in 2000 was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Krone also became the first female jockey to win the Breeders’ Cup race in 2003 on Halfbridled. She has also been honored by induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Cowgirl Hall of Fame.
Ms Sawaya said: “We are really proud to have Julie Krone as one of our Ambassadors. The Festival thanks her for accepting to be our Ambassador.”
