California Chrome Wins the Preakness Stakes

May 17, 2014, Maryland ~ Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome added another victory to his five undefeated races in 2014 by winning the 139th running of the $1.5 – million Preakness Stakes today, May 17, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. This win keeps alive the bid by the flashy California raider to become the 12th Triple Crown winner and the first since Affirmed in 1978.

The third race in the Triple Crown, the 1.5 mile Belmont Stakes, is the longest race of the series and gives the winner just three weeks before his next run on June 7 in New York.

A home-bred colt by partners Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, California Chrome is trained by Art Sherman and was ridden by Victor Espinoza.
