Madjani Shadwell Stakes brings Arabian Racing back to Rome

May 17, 2013, Campannelle Racecourse, Rome ~ Gavino Sanna produced a well-timed run aboard Rio Herode to win a historic first running of the Madjani Shadwell Arabian Stakes for Purebred Arabians at Capannelle Racecourse in Rome on May 12. The historic Campannelle course was first constructed in 1881 and was rebuilt in 1926. The Madjani Shadwell race was the first time in over a century that a race for Arabians was included on a thoroughbred card – and this day that card included the prestigious Premi Presidente della Republica GBI Racing Group 1 with €209,000 ($268,000) prize money.

The Madjani Shadwell Arabian Stake, with a purse of €25,000 ($32,000)  was 2nd on a nine-race card sponsored by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai. Other races were sponsored under the banner of the UAE, Emirates airline, Jebel Ali Racecourse, Shadwell and two of Shadwell Stud’s most famous stallions – Madjani and Nayef.

The Shadwell Arabian Stakes lived up to its billing and produced an exciting finish with Rio Herode ridden by Sanna Gavino coming hard to deny stablemate Romulus, ridden by Migheli Antonio Domenico, by three quarters of-a-length at the line. Rhajid, the mount of Sulas Salvatore was third by two lengths and Rasinui, ridden by Sanna Mario, fourth in the seven horse field.  Roi Herode (LAERTE CPS  x WHINDER EL DIBLIS)  is owned and trained by Pinna Antonio Efisio.
