Mith’hf Athbah Emerges Winner at Royal Cavalry of Oman Clarendon Stakes

Athba Stud completes a one, two at Newbury

18 August 2018, Newbury, UK ~ Racing like the proven runner that he is, Mith’hf Athbah, owned by Athba Stud, was the clear winner in the field of 9 at the £15,000 Royal Cavalry of Oman Clarendon Stakes Group 3 PA run on 18 August 2018, at Newbury Racecourse.

With the early drizzle having cleared, the nine runners looked a classy bunch and the 5 Furlongs ahead would be a step back in class for many of them.

The race started at a brisk tempo with Delishess quickly away and setting the early pace with the two Beverley Deutrom trained horses. Storm Troupour and Kao Kat MHF, also quickly into stride. Seven of the nine runner field were racing off the bridle with many looking to hold a winning chance approaching the final two furlongs. However, forming a pincer movement were the hugely talented Collington pair Shomoos Athbah and Mith’haf Athbah, both jockeys still sitting with a double handful. Shoomas Athbah best when delivered late, had her run timed perfectly by Tadhg O’Shea but simply couldn’t match her stable companion late on.

Mith’hf Athbah emerged the clear winner under current reigning champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa to demonstrate incredible versatility and endorse previous Group 1 PA success for delighted connections of Athbah Stud, trainer Phil Collington and his team as they also took second place with Shomoos Athbah again playing second fiddle, having taken the same spot in 2017.

A worthy third for the battling Alazees in the hands of Jim Crowley who had tried incredibly hard to get a podium place for trainer James Owen and owner HH Sheikh Hamdan. The Beverley Deutrom 2016 winner Kao Kat MHF, had missed 2017 and certainly looked back in form to finish fourth, just ahead of the Peter Hammersley trained Zayin Angkor Centurion and Naishaan for James Owen.

A delighted but reflective Collington said after,”What a horse he is. He has such talent and scope. I can’t quite believe how good he is; he has won over so many trips now, his versatility is quite incredible. Athbah have given me an amazing opportunity to train a horse like this. He will be a hard act to follow when the time comes for him to go on and do other things.’”
