2015 Tent of Honor Bobbi Patscheider and Racing Hall of Fame horse Don Condare Honored
22 August 2015, Delaware Park is on the East coast of the United States. Bounded on three sides by Virginia, New Jersey, and Maryland, it totals 1,954 square miles (5,060 km), making it the second-smallest state in the United States after Rhode Island. In this small area lies Delaware Park, one of the most beautiful race tracks in the US.
Two Arabian Races made up the card on 22 August. Only in his third race, the chestnut colt, F Sixteen, showed off his long legs as he took control to win the Delaware Park Arabian Derby Gr III. Trainer Randy Nunley put 25 year-old Carol Cedeno in the saddle and she took the colt for a winning spin. The 4 year-old colt by Thoroughbred out of Dixies Valentine had an unhurried start but took over at the 1 mile post easily distancing closest rival Front Rowe. F Sixteen had a win time of 2:18:58. Finishing Order: F Sixteen, Easter Man, Lazur Hess, then RB Madjyk Man for the 1 /4 mile ride. F Sixteen won the Arabian Allowance race on 1 August after winning his Maiden on 14 July, 2015. F Sixteen was bred in Maryland and is owned by Guy Neivens.
Sharon Clark of Rigbie Farm tells about the young F Sixteen:
“F Sixteen was worth waiting on. We trained him lightly as a three-year old, but he was big and we decided to pull him out of training and allow him to mature. We race them when they tell us they’re ready. Some get there at 3 and others make you wait.F Sixteen is an ET (Embryo Transfer) baby and is one of 3 Dixies Valentine x Thoroughbred embryos in the foal crop from 2012. Fearsome is the other and Fascinnator, a 4 yo mare in training, complete the roster.
As far as the process of embryo transfer, it is very labor intensive. We have our team of Dr. Michaela Kristula, who is our primary farm veterinarian, and Dr. Tamara Dobie, reproductive specialist, both from the University of Pa’s New Bolton Center, who together guide us through the breeding season. Our success is a direct result of their combined efforts. Our breeding program is constantly evolving but we are excited by the first efforts of our ETs as they move from the farm to the racetrack.”
The Delaware Park Arabian Juvenile Filly Championship Gr III started four horses after Sand Dove was scratched. The $20,000 race of 1 mile 70 yards race saw Jewell AA under Ricardo Chiappe in her second race bolt headlong out of the gate, moving to the lead at the top of the stretch. RB Big N Rich chased home but had to settle for second while Madgicall under veteran Kirsten Swan came in third. Jewell AA is owned by Joe Gillis and trained by Guy Smith. She won her Maiden on 12 August at Delaware Park.
The Arabian Racing Cup has guaranteed $10,000 in Breeder Incentive Bonus money to four races at Delaware Park for 2015. The amount of $2,500 was awarded to Breeders of the first 3 placed horses in the two Arabian races on 22 August as follows: $1,000 to the winning horse; $800 to second placed horse; $700 to the third placed horse. A like amount was awarded for the Delaware Park Arabian Oaks, Gr II on 11 July. The next Breeders Incentive will be awarded at the Delaware Park Juvenile Championship Stakes Gr III on 12 September.
In its 78th season, Delaware Park features live racing from 16 May to 17 October.
Honors Awarded
2015 Tent of Honor Inductee, Bobbie Patscheider
Bobbi Patscheider’s involvement with the Arabian horse began in the show world. She and husband Don owned Patlan Arabians in Williston, Florida. Later they both embraced Arabian racing. Bobbie, never one to take a back seat, moved into the position of Treasurer for the Ocala Arabian Breeders Society, becoming integral in the Arabian racing world of the USA. In 1996 following the passing of her friend Jean Streeter, Bobbi took over as editor of Arabian Finish Line magazine and continued in this labor of love until her passing in 2014. Bobbi’s passion for the breed, desire to give back to the industry, loyalty to her friends, compassion for those in need, and her love and devotion to her family were the hallmarks of a truly remarkable woman who will be missed.
Racing Hall of Fame Inductee, Don Condare
Don Condare (RD FiveStar x Elconda, by El Ghazi++/) earned $172,914 in 42 starts, running for 8 years from 1995 to 2002 with a win record of 22. Six of the wins were stakes races including two wins of the G1 Arabian Cup Championship Sprint. In 1997 Don Condare was named Darley Older Horse of the Year. Don Condare was bred by Dawn Young Hansen, raced by Cre Run Enterprises under trainer Lynn Ashby, and is currently in retirement at Valour Arabians with Howell and Margo Wallace.
In 1995, the Arabian Horse Trust began an honorary program that recognizes great Arabian racehorses (Racing Hall of Fame) and leadership individuals within the sport of Arabian racing (Tent of Honor). In 2008, all voting privileges and decisions were transferred by the Arabian Horse Trust to the Arabian Jockey Club (AJC), and have remained under the AJC’s domain ever since. With respect to great achievement superseding all criteria, inductees are chosen only when individuals and horses are found to be worthy of the honor. As such, this award is not awarded annually. In fact, this year’s inductees represent only the 13th induction into the prestigious program.
