18 September 2014, UK ~ Top European trainers/owners will gather in Newmarket for the 25 September running of the Group 1 Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club UK Arabian Derby. The ten runner field has been supplemented by an additional four from Belgium, France and the UK to vie for the £50,000 contest at Newmarket Racecourse.
French trainer Damian De Watrigant’s new addition is the lightly raced filly Najlaa, who has never finished out of the frame and makes her first trip to the UK for leading owner and breeder H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Also making his UK debut is the Qatari bred Majd Al Uraiq, trained in Belgium by Leo Braem. Earlier this year the colt laid claim to being one of Qatar’s top four-year-olds, with victories in the Qatar Silver Sword and the Sheikh Abdulla Bin Khalifa Al Thani Silver Cup.
UK based trainer Beverley Deutrom, who is seeking her first PA Group win, will have her first runners in the contest after supplementing Karar and Attila De Rouaisse, who both look to have a tough task ahead.
Arabian Racing Organisation Racing Manager Amanda Smith commented, “It is excellent to see a great balance between domestic and overseas entries, and I am delighted that many horses are making their UK debut at this important event.”
The race is a valuable first-time addition to Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club’s extensive European sponsorship portfolio which is highlighted by next month’s Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend featuring the world’s two richest races on turf for Thoroughbreds and Pure Bred Arabians.
