29 September 2018, Kentucky, USA ~ Betty and Joseph Gillis’ Mississippi-bred Quick Sand AA sealed the win by eight lengths on Saturday, 29 September, 2018, in the $100,000 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup (Grade I) for purebred Arabian 4-year-olds and up at Churchill Downs.
Quick Sand AA rallied from off the pace under jockey Sasha Risenhoover, dueled and passed pace-setting Uptown Sandy Girl at the top of the stretch to win going away.
Madjikman under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan rallied to finish second, while Quick Sand AA’s stablemate Easter Man picked up third with Keibar Coa aboard. Uptown Sand Girl finished fourth. Finished – Quick and Rich, RB Hocus Pocus, Mystical MHF, Thess Is Awesome, Burn Notice MC.
Quick and Rich won the 2017 edition of the President of the UAE Cup at Churchill Downs.
The Gillis and Torrez combination scored a double with third place, Easter Man.
Trained by Jerenesto Torrez, Quick Sand AA has now won 11-career races through 22 starts with earnings of $262,711. The winner took home $54,200 from the $100,000 prize and winners were paid to 9th place.
The 5-year-old gray son of Burning Sand x Triumphs Silkie paid $5.60, $3.80 and $2.60. The victory was Quick Sand AA’s fourth Grade1 win of 2018 and makes him a likely Arabian Horse of the Year winner. The home-bred previously won the August 2018, Delaware Classic Handicap G 1 at Delaware Park, the April Gr 1 Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Stakes at Santa Anita Park, and the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahayan Stakes Gr 1 in March at Sam Houston, Texas.
